How much load can I put on the brackets?

The brackets are rated for a maximum load of 100kg per pair distributed weight. However, bracket strength is only one of the factors to consider when thinking about loadings: upright spacing and shelf-stiffness are also relevant - see below.

How far apart should I space the uprights?

Typical spacing is around 750mm - or between 600mm and 900mm. In practice it is usually a matter of what you think looks right. However, bear the following practical points in mind:

  • How much weight will there be on the shelves?

    If the load is heavy (e.g. publication archives) then uprights should be more closely spaced.

  • How stiff is the shelf material?

    If you use thin shelf material (e.g. 15mm chipboard) it will tend to bend visibly in the middle when loaded. You can counter this either by moving the uprights closer together.

  • How strong are the wall fixings?

    If you have good fixings into masonry or timber, there is no problem: but if the substrate is weak or unsound (e.g. plasterboard or old plaster) then it is good practice to spread the load by either (A) adding extra uprights; or (B) increasing the height of the uprights so that there are at least two fixings above the highest shelf.

Can I fix safely to a cavity wall?

Yes - as long as the surface layer is sound, you can use a special fixing which will give you an anchor almost as strong as in a solid wall.

Is this the same Click Shelving that Habitat used to sell?

Yes - in terms of hardware (i.e.the brackets and uprights) the system is exactly the same. Please note we no longer supply the shelving.

Can I order from outside the UK?

Yes - we can ship anywhere in the world, but will quote separately for overseas delivery. Tell us where you are and what you want to order, and we will give you a complete price.

Can I get a brochure?

Of course! We can send you a printed brochure which covers the entire Click range, free of charge, with no obligation to buy. To request a brochure simply fill out our brochure request form.

What about special sizes & finishes not shown in the price list?

Standardisation of sizes and finishes is what keeps shelf prices down, so it is generally not worth considering "specials" for small quantities. But if you are planning a substantial installation (involving more than say 20 individual shelves) then non-standard specifications may be viable. Much of our business is in the custom contract field, and in principle we can supply any size or type of shelf you might want.

For example, can I use glass instead of timber?

Yes - if you want to use glass shelves we can supply special support flanges to go onto the brackets: and we can quote you for supplying the shelves too, as long as the quantity is more than 20 pieces. Options include clear float or tempered glass with polished edges in 6mm, 8mm or 10mm: and special materials such as tinted or laminated glass with special interlayers. Contact us if you want to find out more.

What about wiring? Can I integrate it with the system?

If you are an early user of Click Shelving, you may remember how we used to show wiring for Hi Fi and lighting inside the wall upright channel, running behind the brackets and hidden with the cover strip. We no longer recommend this practice (although it is physically possible) for three reasons. First, it does not comply with current regulations for electrical ducting. Second, we no longer make spotlights for fixing to WU shelving uprights. Third, hi-fi cabling today is often so thick that it will not easily fit through the small aperture left by the SB bracket.

However, if you are still using early Click SL spotlights, or thin-cable hi-fi leads, there is nothing to prevent you continuing to do so - but please observe the following guidelines:

  • Always use 3amp fuse protection for mains connection;

  • Only use double-insulated cable for mains leads;

  • Never move or add brackets after wiring is installed.

Can I paint the hardware a different colour?

If you want your cover strip a different colour, you can paint it with an aerosol spray. You can do the same with the outside of the WU upright - but do not paint the inside of the channel as this might interfere with the fixing interface. Brackets should not generally be painted.
